On Columbine anniversary, Orange County student walkouts today may be smaller, more politically focused |
A month after thousands of Southern California students walked out of about 150 schools to protest gun violence, it’s unclear how many will take part in a second demonstration set for today, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting. Both walkouts were planned nationwide in the wake of the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where student activists have seized the spotlight to demand adults address gun safety. |

Voting for young people explained: a quick guide |
In recent years California has become one of the best places in the nation to be a young voter. Thanks to a number of laws passed since 2013, young Californians are now taught more about voting, and although they can’t vote until they are 18, they can pre-register to vote as 16- and 17-year-olds and have new ways to cast their ballots on Election Day. |

Cal State decides not to raise tuition as legislators support more funds |
Leaders of the 23-campus California State University system have decided not to increase tuition for the 2018-19 school year, cancelling a planned $228 hike in response to commitments from the Legislature for more state funding. Cal State system Chancellor Timothy White announced Friday that the university will drop its previous proposal to raise undergraduate tuition by $228, or 3.9 percent, to $5,970 a year and will instead keep tuition flat. |

Chef Challenge Serves Up Support for Schools |
The ninth annual Chef Challenge, hosted by Lumberyard restaurant owners Cary and Suzanne Redfearn, again served up a culinary competition benefitting SchoolPower.
The March 26 event featured Laguna school principals as dueling guest “chefs” competing with two different, three-course meals. Diners voted on their favorite items and the coveted golden spatula trophy was awarded to the victorious team.
With a robust turnout of 114 guests and $8,600 raised, Chef Challenge was a win for our public schools.
