California to get huge boost in child care funds from federal budget
Thousands of children will get access to subsidized child care as a result of a massive increase in child care funding approved by Congress last month. Congress approved — and Trump signed, albeit reluctantly — a $1.3 trillion budget that includes a nearly $2.4 billion increase in funding for the Child Care and Development Block Grant program. The program is the largest federal child care assistance program and is intended to provide child care to low-income parents so they can work or attend an educational or job training program.

New charter transparency bill, same opposing sides
State lawmakers are once again considering legislation that would subject charter schools and their governing boards to the same open meeting and disclosure laws as traditional school districts. SB 1216, authored by Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Orinda, mirrors previous efforts to codify that public charter schools must comply with the Brown Act, the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act, and the California Public Records Act–laws that ensure the public has the information concerning public agencies and can attend open meetings held by those agencies.

VIDEO: OCDE’s sports league promotes more than just competition
In the Orange County Department of Education athletics program, wins and losses are likely the least important focus for teams. OCDE’s Freeway League focuses on participation, teamwork, camaraderie and other skills students can incorporate into the classroom and their overall daily lives.
