Think K-12 education isn’t important to California voters? Think again, according to new poll in governor’s race
How important is K-12 public education to California voters as they choose a new governor this year? Very. And that sentiment is growing. Nearly two-thirds — 64 percent — of likely voters in a new survey called education “very important,” an increase from 58 percent four years ago when the same question was asked. A full 90 percent said candidates’ positions on education are important to them.

Ocean View School District trustee files suit, gets restraining order against blogger over alleged threats and harassment
An Ocean View School District Board trustee has sued and obtained a restraining order against a Huntington Beach blogger who court papers say has harassed her and threatened her through his website, social media and during a meeting. Gina Clayton-Tarvin’s attorneys filed the suit on March 22 against blogger Charles Keeler Johnson, also known as Chuck Johnson, who “seems fixated” on her, according to the suit. Johnson’s website is often critical of Clayton-Tarvin and other individuals or topics and includes vulgarities, doctored images and crude products for purchase.

Focusing on the language skills of English Learners key to boosting math scores
Boosting the language development of students whose first language is not English is critical if California is to narrow the wide and persistent gaps in math test scores between its nearly 1.4 million English learners and their English-proficient peers. That is the recommendation in a recent report by Education Trust–West, which highlights the successful strategies that five California districts implemented to improve the academic performance of English learners.

Big money from charter backers has potential to reshape governor's race
It is crunch time for advocates of charter schools who want to see continued growth of enrollments in California’s charter schools and also want to elect a governor who they view as being most sympathetic to their cause. In this case, the candidate they are backing is former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who has been at war with California’s teachers unions for years, despite having worked for the United Teachers of Los Angeles for many years earlier in his career, as well as being a consultant to the California Teachers Association at one time.

Universal pre-K for 4-year-olds moves forward
An ambitious plan to expand eligibility for transitional kindergarten to all four-year-olds statewide won cautious backing last week from a key legislative panel. AB 837 by state Senator Bill Dodd, D-Davis, would phase-in the expansion beginning with the 2020-21 school year, but concerns over cost and quality of service could jeopardize the bill’s progress.

VIDEO: Science gets immersive at Rancho Soñado, one of 14 field trip sites offered by Inside the Outdoors
Nestled against the Santa Ana Mountains, Rancho Soñado serves as the home base of OCDE’s Inside the Outdoors environmental education program. As such, it’s also one of the program’s popular field trips sites, giving students throughout the region a chance to explore unspoiled local ecosystems. We could go on and on here about the picturesque scenery and natural wildlife that’s right in our own backyard, but we’re not really sure words would do it justice. Besides, our Media Services team shot the way-more-compelling video you see above after recently tagging along with some visiting Anaheim elementary students.
