Once confined to science fiction, artificial intelligence has broken through to our reality, flashing its potential to transform industries and our society in ways never before imagined. And schools are no exception. AI isn’t just knocking on classroom doors anymore, it’s inside, and we are already discovering how it can make learning more engaging, interactive and tailored to the needs of each student. At the same time, it’s clear that there must be safeguards in place, along with proper guidance from educators to ensure we’re leading students along the path to becoming responsible digital citizens. |

Why Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified is embracing a new athletics-based school program |
An Orange County school district is set to launch a new program next year aimed at providing student-athletes with an alternative approach to training and education.
Starting next school year, Placentia Yorba Linda School District will offer what it’s calling the Universal Sports Institute. The tuition-free sports-focused program will let students from third to 12th grade extensively train at an elite level in their sport of choice while also allowing for flexibility with their school work, such as remote learning or personalized schedules.

Transgender rights vs. parent rights. California goes to court to settle school divide |
Supporters of a proposed November ballot initiative wanted the all-important title of their measure to reflect their beliefs, a name like “Protect Kids of California Act.” But Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta saw things differently when his office chose the name signature gatherers must use: “Restricts Rights of Transgender Youth.” Among its provisions, the initiative in question — which has not yet qualified for the ballot — would require schools to notify parents if a child changed gender identification unofficially or in schools records, such as a roll sheet. |

Orange County Superintendent Quietly Misses a Year on Medical Leave |
Orange County Superintendent Al Mijares hasn’t been seen in a public school board meeting in over a year due to medical issues, and questions are swirling on why nothing has been publicly disclosed. His position as superintendent is a unique one, serving as the only elected school administrator overseeing a 1,400-person department that manages payroll and provides legal support to the county’s other 28 school districts. Mijares stopped attending county board of education meetings at the end of 2022. |

Orange School Board Gets New President in Wake of Recall |
The Orange Unified School Board has a new president following the recall of two trustees – amidst mounting concerns the former president violated people’s First Amendment rights. “I think the community spoke loudly and pretty clearly about what it wanted and what they were not happy with and not being happy with the way things were going,” said Trustee Kris Erickson during Thursday night’s board meeting.
Erickson, who along with Trustee Andrea Yamasaki brought the proposal forward, said Trustee John Ortega – who was removed as president – violated people’s rights during public comment.

LA arts education group fights falling literacy rates through poetry |
Salome Agbaroji wrote her first poem, a rap, in the second grade, and she’s been crafting rhymes ever since. Now the 18-year-old Harvard student is best known as the nation’s youth poet laureate. “I have always loved poetry,” said Agbaroji. “Even before I knew it was poetry, I started loving rap music, so I’ve always loved poetry and using words creatively. That’s always just been what I gravitated to, even as a young, young child.” A Nigerian-American poet from Los Angeles, Agbaroji has performed spoken word poetry for the Golden Globes, an NFL halftime show, and she’s talked poetry with President Joe Biden at the White House. Her passion for spoken word performance began back at Gahr High School in Cerritos, where her love of words was further fueled by the arts education nonprofit Get Lit-Words Ignite. |

If You're a Mixed-Status Student Still Struggling With FAFSA, You Have Options |
Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA this year has been complicated, to say the least. Especially if your family is considered “mixed status” — when a student has a Social Security number but one parent does not, due to their immigration status. When the Department of Education began its process of revamping FAFSA several years ago, one of the stated goals was to make the application more easily accessible for mixed-status families. Federal officials told KQED last year that the updated FAFSA would allow undocumented parents to complete the form without needing a Social Security number. |

After years of mistrust, Stockton Unified unable to accurately track finances: auditor |
Throughout last school year, Stockton Unified School District’s bookkeeping lacked the checks and balances necessary to ensure the district’s financial statements accurately showed where money was, independent auditors found. It was the second year in a row that Stockton Unified — which had a net $354.7 million in the 2022/2023 school year — appeared unable to catch discrepancies in its books, according to the district's latest yearly audit, done by a Sacramento accounting company. |
