Placentia-Yorba Linda school district makes its pick for voting areas

Harbor High health teacher gives students extra credit when they support his weight loss
Newport Harbor High School teacher Ed Bell stepped onto the physician beam scale placed in the corner of his classroom Wednesday morning. The scale read 255 pounds. Bell had lost 8 pounds since he last weighed himself in November. His students cheered, and he did a little dance.

10 tons of snow arrives for students to play in at Huntington Beach school
What’s it like playing in 10 tons of snow — along the coast? Students at Sun View Elementary in Huntington Beach frolicked in the white stuff as the campus experienced its first “snow day” Thursday morning with help from the Kiwanis Club of Huntington Beach.

California schools get an ‘F’ in financial literacy instruction
California’s efforts to teach high school students about balancing checkbooks, saving money and other staples of personal finance were graded an ‘F’ in a national survey released last week. The report, by the Center for Financial Literacy at Champlain College in Vermont, looked at how many hours of financial literacy instruction are required of high school students in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. ‘A’ grades went to Virginia, Utah, Missouri, Tennessee and Alabama, where all students are required to take at least one semester of financial literacy before they graduate.

TOW Greenhouse Opens its Doors
Students at Top of the World Elementary will get a chance to learn first-hand about sustainability and harvest fresh produce for the Laguna Beach Food Pantry in the school’s new greenhouse, a school district statement said. PTA proposed the greenhouse and food program in successfully seeking a grant from Seeds of Change, a Rancho Dominguez non-profit that supports community gardens from sales of some Mars Corporation brands.

Sterling Lives Up to His Name
Laguna Beach High School student Sterling Butler was honored by Laguna Beach Rotary Club as student of the month for science. Sterling is the decorated captain of the varsity soccer team and a seven-year member of the West Coast Futbol Club. Sterling also participates on the school’s Athletic Leadership Team and House of Representatives, the Rotary Club statement said.
