County Halts Census Outreach Grants to City of Santa Ana and Local School District
County officials have pulled back plans to award Census outreach money to the city of Santa Ana and Santa Ana Unified School District, prompting protests from city and school district officials that it’s retaliation for raising public concerns about a proposed county homeless shelter in their city. With billions of dollars in funding across OC depending on an accurate Census, county officials are distributing about $1.5 million in state money for local agencies and nonprofits to get the word out in communities that are difficult to count.

A student didn’t come to class one day because ICE had arrested him. So his teachers went to court.
The principal’s voice piped through the PA system at Wilbur Cross High School with a startling announcement. ICE had detained a student. “Everyone was worried and asking around,” says Sandy Martinez-Paz, a 17-year-old junior at the school. “We wanted to know who it was.” Students later learned that Mario Aguilar, an 18-year-old who enrolled in the school last year, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at a nearby courthouse where he’d gone to face charges after a traffic accident.

Lawsuit Claims SAT And ACT Are Illegal In California Admissions
A draft of the document obtained by NPR argues that the tests — long used to measure aptitude for college — are deeply biased and provide no meaningful information about a student's ability to succeed, and therefore their requirement is unconstitutional.

If the University of California drops the SAT, what would take its place?
The debate over whether to stop using the SAT in admissions at the sprawling and nationally influential University of California is approaching a turning point. What would a post-SAT University of California might look like. Would the university simply go test-optional — letting students choose whether to submit scores — or test-flexible, accepting another standardized test in lieu of the SAT and its lesser-used cousin, the ACT? Should standardized tests be used just to decide whether an applicant is eligible for admission, or to winnow the pool of well-qualified contenders? And are test scores a necessary part of admissions at all?
