‘Meet the Need’ computer drive aims to close digital divide for low-income families |
Got an old computer that’s gathering dust? It could help an Orange County student navigate distance learning. OCDE is teaming up with Cox Communications, Cox Business and the Orange County Business Council to rally businesses and the public to take part in a two-week computer drive that will put refurbished devices in the hands of local students who need them. Computers 2 Kids, which recycles and refurbishes used computers and delivers them to low-income families, says it’s received a record number of requests during the COVID-19 pandemic, as school districts pivoted to online learning and hybrid models.

Watch Now: We’re saluting the 2021 Orange County Teachers of the Year with a video tribute |
Around this time of year, OCDE would typically host a formal gala to spotlight dozens of Orange County’s top educators. There would be musical performances. There would be pre-recorded remarks from the honorees. There would be special video tributes. And it would all take place at the Disneyland Hotel. A more traditional Orange County Teachers of the Year event is already in the planning stages to salute this year’s winners once life gets back to normal. And in the meantime, OCDE’s Media Services team has produced a virtual tribute to the 2021 honorees, including the six county finalists.

The Saints go marching into Santa Ana Stadium before every home football game.
Led by a police escort, Santa Ana High’s band parades in full uniforms from the campus to the stadium. The Marching Saints have been doing this for years; it is among the great traditions in Orange County high schools. Another tradition now in jeopardy because of the coronavirus.

Pride at Kamala Harris’ childhood elementary school as Bay Area native makes history |
Marvin Reed is the only Black teacher at Kamala Harris’ childhood elementary school.
On Friday, he was waiting, like the rest of America, to find out whether the first woman and first person of color will make it to the White House as vice president. It’s only taken 244 years. “It’s very exciting, very nerve-racking and very scary,” said Reed, who worked in his empty classroom at Thousand Oaks Elementary on Friday because of the coronavirus pandemic, the faces of his 18 pupils popping up on his computer screen.

University of California expands list of courses that meet math requirement for admission |
High school students planning to apply to the University of California now have a broader set of courses they can take to meet the math requirement for admission to the public university system. As more high schools across California have developed and adopted new college-prep math courses, math education and equity advocates have urged the state’s public universities to allow these courses to count toward admission requirements.

More changes proposed for California’s ethnic studies curriculum to strengthen ‘balance’ |
The California Department of Education is recommending dozens of wording changes and additional lesson plans about Pacific Islander, Japanese and Korean Americans and other ethnic groups to its proposed model ethnic studies curriculum. The revisions respond to criticisms that the document, which is undergoing its third revision, is too polemical in presenting racial struggles and omits the achievements and history of various ethnic and religious groups.

Child Care Can Help LA Families Financially Survive The Pandemic, But It's Still Unavailable For Many |
Parents who've found a spot in child care might have a better shot at economically weathering the pandemic — but with early education programs largely closed and private providers struggling, finding a spot can be a challenge, particularly for low-income families. Case in point: the Head Start and Early Head Start programs overseen by the Los Angeles County Office of Education. Although they've started to reopen in-person under stringent guidelines- small class sizes, daily health checks, and frequent toy-cleaning — they're still operating at greatly reduced capacity.

El Monte City School District honors its retirees with drive-thru parade |
El Monte City School District officials wanted to honor their retirees but there would be no banquet this year. Instead, like many others, they held a drive-thru celebration Friday at the district office. The district had 27 retirees and many of them showed up. “The district still wanted to do something special for our new retirees, so we took the car parade idea and adapted it for our beloved staff members,” Robert Dozmati, district spokesman said in an email.
