Deep racial divides among Californians on whether college is necessary
Is college necessary? It turns out about half of Californians don’t think so, according to a new Public Policy Institute of California survey. The difference of opinions in ethnic groups is surprising: While two-thirds of Latinos answer yes, a majority of Asian- and African-Americans think so — but only 35 percent of whites agree.

Math festivals help elementary students - and their families - see math as fun
A dozen parents gathered around veteran math educator Leanna Baker, moments before students show up for what is billed as a math “festival” for students at Allendale Elementary School in Oakland. “Do your best not to give them an answer,” Baker told the dozen parent volunteers about how best to help the transitional kindergarten to fifth grade students participating in math activities arranged for that day. “We want them to be problem solvers.”

Anaheim school considers replacing Confederacy-inspired mascot
An Orange County school district will consider Monday whether to replace a high school mascot that depicts a Confederate soldier. The move comes after students at the Anaheim school raised concerns about the mascot’s potentially racist connotations. A group of mostly African-American students from Savanna High School, along with parents and community members, approached the Board of Trustees for Anaheim Union High School District in October to ask that the school’s Rebel mascot be replaced.

Q&A: Stress management techniques used to eliminate barriers to learning
The numbers are alarming. Up to one in five U.S. children has a diagnosable mental health issue, such as anxiety or depression. Yet only one-third will receive treatment. Dr. Lucy Vezzuto knows the statistics all too well. More important, she knows these disorders can be barriers to learning if they’re not addressed.
