Anonymous donor pays off $7,813 school lunch debt of Ocean School District students |
More than 200 families that had an outstanding bill for their child’s school lunch program at Ocean View School District received an unexpected surprise recently when an anonymous donor paid off their entire balance. The donor provided the officials with a check for $7,813 to pay off the district’s entire negative lunch balance. The donor, who has lived in the Ocean View community for 20 years, told district staff that he understands how critical the childhood years are for developing a love of learning and setting children up for success.

Esperanza High student arrested on suspicion of terrorist threats |
Police arrested an Esperanza High School student on Friday, Nov. 1, on suspicion of threatening the campus. The 15-year-old suspect is accused of making a threat to the safety of the school after getting involved in a non-physical dispute with two other students, Anaheim Sgt. Shane Carringer said. Officers responded Friday afternoon and took the boy into custody on suspicion of making the terrorist threats. He was held at the Orange County Juvenile Hall over the weekend. It was unclear if he was released on Monday.

Santa Ana voters to fill vacant seats Tuesday on city council, school board |
The Santa Ana Unified School District also is holding a special election Tuesday to fill a board seat left vacant by Cecilia Iglesias, who a year ago was elected to city council. Four candidates are vying for that seat on the School Board. Earlier this year, members of the school board discussed appointing someone to the vacancy but eventually deadlocked on the final two candidates, moving instead to let voters decide. The approximate cost of that special election ranges from $526,853 to $583,267, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters. The school district will pick up the tab.

California’s strict vaccination law will have only ‘modest’ impact, study says |
Since California tightened its childhood vaccination laws in 2016, public health officials across the country have been closely watching for signs of success in bolstering vaccination rates. A study published Monday offers an answer. In a brief in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers found that the strict law will have only a “modest” impact in increasing vaccination rates by 2027. Supporters of the law, known as SB 277, contested the findings, pointing out that the law has already pushed up the state’s kindergarten vaccination rate to never-before-seen levels.

Blackface-wearing Milpitas teacher should have been sent home immediately, superintendent acknowledges |
As Milpitas school district officials continue their investigation into a teacher who wore blackface to school on Halloween, the superintendent acknowledged Monday that the teacher should not have been allowed to finish out the school day after being told to wash off the makeup. “In hindsight, we should have removed him immediately once we found that he had the blackface, instead of just having him wash it off, but that’s in hindsight,” Superintendent Cheryl Jordan said. The teacher has been on paid administrative leave since Saturday.

A novel idea for California: requiring students to fill out financial aid forms |
A legislator wants California to mandate aid applications, like three other states.
Beyond all the debate about the types and sizes of financial aid for college, one fact matters most for students and parents: You can’t get grants and loans unless you apply for them. That’s why two years ago the Val Verde Unified School District in Riverside County became the first in California to make completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form a requirement for high school graduation.
