This stirring Zoom version of ‘Lion Sleeps Tonight’ by Arcadia kids is sure to lift your spirits |
Music can be a huge pick-me-up. Anyone watching the video of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” made virtually by 61 members of the Arcadia Unified School District middle school choir, would almost certainly have their spirits lifted. It’s that heartfelt. It comes at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has reduced students to distance learning. That might be a bummer, but this video is super cool, students in the district said. But it wasn't easy to put it together. It took about 25 hours of editing.

School districts try out different strategies to boost immunization rates for non-Covid diseases |
Declining rates means some students won't be able to return to campuses whenever they reopen. Even as public health officials face the challenge of how to vaccinate all or most people to protect them from the Covid-19 virus, school administrators are having to come up with innovative ways to ensure that students get immunized against more familiar diseases like measles and whooping cough. To the alarm of school district officials, immunization rates have plummeted in California during the pandemic.

San Diego Unified Distributes Extra Meals To Students Ahead Of Holiday |
The San Diego Unified School District early this week ramped up its meal distribution program for needy students to make sure they have enough to eat over the long Thanksgiving weekend. The district began the meal distribution program at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March to help ensure that students eligible for free and reduced-price meals wouldn’t go hungry while school campuses are closed.

As California’s new charter law takes effect, schools bracing for shutdowns could win a reprieve from pandemic |
Last year, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new charter school law intended to settle a longstanding feud between charter operators and those calling for tighter restrictions on their growth. Known as Assembly Bill 1505, the compromise between charters and the teachers union gave local districts the authority to consider whether the opening of a new charter would negatively impact their own schools, and it gave charters a new process to appeal rejected applications. But with the law going into effect in the middle of a pandemic, districts lack key information needed to decide whether existing charters should continue operating — assessment data from 2020.
