Newport Beach teen nominated for TIME’s Kid of the Year for ‘Skip the Plastic Straw’ campaign |
It started at Newport Coast Elementary School. Chloe Mei Espinosa, asked to identify a passion project she could research and act on in the sixth grade, had recently seen a video of a sea turtle with a plastic straw lodged in its nostril. For her project, she decided she’d try to eliminate plastic straws and launched “Skip the Plastic Straw,” with a website called skiptheplasticstraw.com. In acknowledgment of her efforts, she’s been nominated for the first ever Nickelodeon and TIME magazine Kid of the Year award.
The prize, for which Chloe Mei is a top-20 finalist, looks to recognize young leaders who are making a positive impact in their communities.

Kindergartners struggle to learn online. But this mother-daughter duo keeps them glued |
A year ago, mother and daughter taught in classrooms one room apart at Bushnell Way Elementary School in Highland Park — Mrs. Carter with 4-year-olds, Ms. Tai in a mixed group of children ages 4 and 5. Many of the felt puppets and linking cubes they shared there are the same ones Karen Carter used when her daughter was a student in her classroom. Out of respect for her mother’s long tenure, Tai Carter goes by Ms. Tai at school.

With classrooms closed, scientists take over virtual STEM lessons in LA Unified |
Field trips and hands-on lessons are an integral part of K-12 science instruction — at least they should be in normal times. But they have virtually disappeared this school year as a result of students learning from home. Now, as California is experiencing another coronavirus surge and distance learning continues for by far the majority of students, scientists and museum guides are trying to fill the gap and are taking to Zoom to meet students at home.

Drive-thru Thanksgiving: CA district offers immunizations, groceries and turkeys to more than 200 students |
More than 200 students in one California district received turkeys, groceries and their required school immunizations at a drive-thru clinic last week.
With Thanksgiving looming, the event for West Contra Costa Unified School District families in Richmond, California, on Thursday attempted to solve two problems at once — many families in the district are vulnerable to food insecurity, and more than 700 students still hadn’t formally registered for school because they were missing their regular immunizations, said Tony Wold, the district’s associate superintendent of business services.
