Don’t expect LAUSD to reopen schools in January, board president says
Los Angeles Unified’s school board president believes that January is no longer a realistic timeframe for the nation’s second-largest school district to reopen schools, as record numbers of new coronavirus cases continue to be reported and other districts across the country start to shut down schools once again or roll back their plans to reopen. “Do I think it’s going to happen? No, I don’t,” outgoing board President Richard Vladovic said when asked about the likelihood of a January reopening during a phone interview Friday, Nov. 20.

Coronavirus: Will Bay Area schools remain safe amid case surge?
More than a thousand schools in California reopened classrooms this fall with an array of safety measures — face masks, hand sanitizer, distanced desks — to keep kids from spreading the coronavirus. So far, for the most part, educators and experts say, it appears to be working. But with the virus now spreading so alarmingly that officials are telling people not to gather for Thanksgiving, reopened schools across the Golden State will be put to the test like never before. Can they remain safe? The answer likely will determine how millions of K-12 students will be educated through the rest of the pandemic.

Riverside County suspends school waivers as coronavirus cases climb
With COVID-19 cases rapidly rising, Riverside County announced this week it has temporarily suspended the waiver application process that lets some schools reopen for in-person instruction. On Oct. 20, Riverside County returned to the most-restrictive purple tier of the state’s coronavirus reopening plan. In this tier, only pre-school, kindergarten and elementary schools can resume on-campus classes if local and state health officials approve a waiver. That process is now on hold after the county’s case adjusted rate doubled over the past two weeks.

Distance learning stokes fears of excessive screen time
Christine Whalen has a spirited 5-year-old who started kindergarten in the fall. It’s not going well. Ella gets so bored on Zoom that she quickly squirms, wiggles and tries to flee. One day when Whalen left the room for a moment, she came back to find her little girl lying on the ground, sticking her leg so high in the air that all the teacher could see was her tiny foot. Another day, Ella snuck out of the room entirely, leaving a Cookie Monster stuffed animal in her seat to fool the teacher.

Laguna Beach HS, Thurston Middle reopening nixed amid COVID-19 case spike

At the earliest, Laguna Beach’s secondary schools could reopen in January, if Orange County is able to move out of the purple tier in the next few weeks, Supt. Jason Viloria said in a statement to parents on Monday.
