San Marcos Elementary Lost Nearly Half Its Teaching Staff in One Year
Nearly half of the teachers at the school are new to campus – and most are new to teaching altogether, a significant shakeup that could disrupt student outcomes. The district’s new superintendent, and the school’s new principal, said the changes represent an opportunity.

The Learning Curve: Newsom’s Universal Pre-K Dreams Are Still Far Off
Less than a year into Gov. Gavin Newsom’s term, a variety of early childhood support programs have been outlined in the state budget. There’s more money for child care, and subsidized slots for preschools have increased, as well as opportunities for teacher training. Still, universal preschool is a long way off, and it remains uncertain whether the governor can achieve such a lofty goal.

'Undoing a mistake': Ken Burns film looks inside the push to bring college education back to prison
Stacks of books are organized meticulously by genre amid the chaos of a maximum security prison. A makeshift desk made from cardboard is placed over a sink in a cramped cell. A chalkboard is filled with Chinese symbols in a room filled with eager students in green jumpsuits. Late night studying. This isn’t the picture most Americans have of prison.  More often than not, violence, isolation and anger are what come to mind. But these scenes from a PBS documentary airing this month show viewers a different kind of prison life – the rigorous pursuit of higher education.

California is poised to confront high proportions of underqualified teachers in low-income schools
The most inexperienced and least qualified teachers continue to teach in schools with the highest-needs students in California — even though those students require the most expert teachers, and research has shown that the effectiveness of classroom teachers is the biggest in-school factor contributing to students’ achievement. Sometime next spring, the state will have collected and will make publicly available comprehensive data detailing the numbers and percentages in every school and district of “ineffective,” “inexperienced” and “out-of-field” teachers — categories of underqualified teachers that federal law requires districts to count.

San Francisco Bay Area district has decided to go to the voters in March asking them to approve a $575 million construction bond measure so it can build and upgrade school facilities.
