Oakland Unified school board holds meeting away from public, again
Protesters, again, drove Oakland Unified school board members out of their seats during Wednesday night’s school board meeting, and into a secluded room where they finished their meeting. Most of the protesters were there to denounce the school board’s September decision to close Kaiser Elementary School in the Hiller Highlands neighborhood and merge it with Sankofa Academy about 4 miles away. Others were there to urge the district to get rid of its police department.

After 18 months, Redlands school employees get pay raises in ‘bittersweet’ deal
A year-and-a-half after their last contract ended, Redlands Unified teachers and classified employees have a new agreement with retroactive 3% raises for the last and the current school years. The school district’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Nov. 12, approved bargaining agreements with the Redlands Teachers Association and the Redlands Education Support Professionals Association. The move comes after months of rallies in red shirts, protests, and what the district referred to as a “work slowdown” but what unions said was limiting members to doing only the work that was required by their contract.

Pension costs feed resistance to higher school taxes in California county, study finds
The unexpected defeat in 2016 of a school parcel tax in wealthy Marin County and the near-defeat of another in the county that same year prompted a trio of authors to look into what had turned many voters against them. Their conclusion, in a report issued last week by the nonprofit Policy Analysis for California Education, was that the high cost of school employee pensions was very much on voters’ minds — a bad omen for other districts considering parcel taxes to supplement state funding for schools.

Student satisfaction is slipping at University of California, survey finds
A growing share of University of California undergraduates report feeling dissatisfied with their college experience, particularly about their ability to get into overcrowded classes and majors, according to a university sponsored survey. Although most students surveyed last year report being pleased overall, 21 percent said they were somewhat-to-very dissatisfied with their “overall academic experience,” up from 17 percent a decade earlier.
