Sweetwater school district’s projected budget deficit rises again
Sweetwater Union High School District may have to make budget cuts of up to $36 million for next school year in order to make ends meet, according to recent calculations by county officials. That’s $12 million more than Sweetwater officials projected in October and $27 million more than the officials projected in June. Sweetwater originally thought it would have to make about $9 million in cuts next school year. Sweetwater is the state’s largest high-school-only district and enrolls roughly 39,000 students

Oakland school board may ban public from meeting after protests
After a chaotic Oakland Unified school board meeting in October, when protesters rushed a metal barricade and were struck by police with batons and arrested, the school board — fearing the same protesters would return — banned the public from its first meeting of November and may do it again Wednesday.

Six Riverside County veterans – and the family of one who died – finally get their high school diplomas
Six veterans who left school before graduating so they could serve their country received high school diplomas Tuesday, Nov. 12. And the family of one — late World War II veteran Vallie Lee Engelauf — accepted a diploma on his behalf during the annual Operation Recognition Program ceremony in Moreno Valley. Operation Recognition, a program of the county education office, Riverside County Board of Education and county Department of Veterans Services, has awarded about 360 diplomas since its inception in 2007.

University of California will support undocumented students, even if DACA ends

California State University proposes to delay extra year of high school math to 2027
Facing strong opposition, a much-debated proposal to increase the number of high school math and related courses required for applicants to the California State University system has been revised to delay implementation by a year, until 2027, with stronger exemptions for students at schools that don’t offer enough classes to meet the requirement.

Oakland school chief's tenure at pivotal point
When Kyla Johnson-Trammell was selected to be superintendent of the Oakland school district two and a half years ago, one reason she got the job was because of her deep roots in California’s eighth-largest city.
