Anaheim Union High School District puts $398 million bond measure on March ballot
Even before completing $249 million in school upgrades that started five years ago, Anaheim Union High School District officials say there’s plenty more work to be done to bring buildings and classrooms up to snuff. That’s why they’ll be asking voters in March to approve a $398 million bond measure. It would raise money through the sale of bonds to further chip away at facilities needs at 19 campuses that were estimated at $1.2 billion in 2014.

Many youths say a high school diploma is enough to succeed, poll shows. Experts are alarmed
Although most young Americans believe in the value of higher education, many still consider a high school diploma alone to be enough for success, according to a survey of teens and young adults by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The findings alarm some experts who say young Americans don’t seem to be getting the message that college pays off. Federal labor data shows a wide earnings gap between Americans who do and do not have a college degree, and unemployment rates are far lower for those with a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Bay Area students and teachers rally for school funding and Prop 13 reform
Youth activists, who since 2018 have been flexing their political muscle with rallies against gun violence and for action on climate change, took on a new cause Saturday morning in the Bay Area: a partial repeal of Proposition 13. In rallies and marches in San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco, student activists and teachers announced their support for a ballot initiative called Schools and Communities First that would weaken Proposition 13 by removing caps on business property taxes. Property taxes limits on homes would remain.

A quarter century on, schools in California now a welcoming place for undocumented students
Exactly a quarter of a century ago, on Nov. 8, 1994, Californians went to the polls to vote on Proposition 187, an initiative to expel undocumented students from its public schools and universities. That was despite a Supreme Court ruling a dozen years earlier that schools were required to educate all students regardless of their immigration status.

DACA Is Going Before The Supreme Court, And People Are Scared
Rosa Barrientos says during her senior year of high school she used to hide in the restrooms with a select group of friends to talk about their college options. "We huddled where nobody could hear us so we can talk about what it was like to be undocumented," she says. That, and driving. Other kids were getting their licenses. Barrientos kept catching rides. "When people asked me, 'Why don't you have your driver's license?' I [told] them, 'I don't want to learn how to drive.' But the truth was that I was undocumented."

Experts Worry Active Shooter Drills In Schools Could Be Traumatic For Students
A regular drumbeat of mass shootings in the U.S., both inside schools and out, has ramped up pressure on education and law enforcement officials to do all they can to prevent the next attack. Close to all public schools in the U.S. conducted some kind of lockdown drill in 2015-2016, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. But many experts and parents are asking if the drills, some complete with simulated gunfire, are doing more harm than good.

Math Looks The Same In The Brains Of Boys And Girls, Study Finds
There's new evidence that girls start out with the same math abilities as boys. A study of 104 children from ages 3 to 10 found similar patterns of brain activity in boys and girls as they engaged in basic math tasks, researchers reported Friday in the journal Science of Learning. "They are indistinguishable," says Jessica Cantlon, an author of the study and professor of developmental neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University.
