Alan Dugard, 87, former softball coach, retires as teacher at Woodbridge
Alan Dugard, at age 87, is retiring as a full-time teacher at Woodbridge High School and is leaving with plenty of fond memories. Dugard was Woodbridge’s softball coach for 24 years before retiring in 2014. He stepped down after leading Woodbridge softball teams to four CIF titles and 15 league crowns. However, Dugard continued to teach world literature and English at the school. But he decided it was time to retire on Tuesday, Oct. 1.


Ocean View School District superintendent gets new contract and 3% raise
The Ocean View School District board this week approved a new four-year contract for Supt. Carol Hansen that comes with a retroactive 3% salary increase. Under her new deal, Hansen’s 2018-19 base salary of $230,004 will increase to $236,945 after she received an “excellent” evaluation from the school board for this school year, according to district officials.


The Learning Curve: Administrator Diversity at Local School Districts, Ranked
On the whole, only 31 percent of administrators in San Diego County are people of color, while the student body is far more diverse: 69 percent of students are non-white.


Moreno Valley parents seek solutions to campus bullying, violence after Landmark Middle School boy’s death
Moreno Valley school officials turned to parents and the community for help Thursday night, Oct. 3, after being accused of failing to prevent bullying and allegations that inaction may have contributed to the death of a middle school boy. Administrators staged a meeting called Solutions through Community Collaboration to discuss answers to campus violence and bullying, though officials have said they cannot comment on whether bullying played a role in the Sept. 16 assault at Landmark Middle School.


New era for charter schools: Newsom signs bill after intensive negotiations
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Thursday a comprehensive rewrite of the charter school law that will expand the authority of local school boards to reject new charter schools while requiring that they more clearly justify their reasons for doing so. At the signing ceremony for Assembly Bill 1505, the leaders of the two main antagonists, the California Teachers Association and the California Charter Schools Association, stood side by side next to him, smiled appreciatively and thanked the governor for a compromise that contains elements they like.


Orange County High Schools Respond To Hate
In November, several members of Garden Grove's Pacifica High School boys' water polo team played a Nazi-era marching song through speakers at an off-campus event, hoisting their right arms in 'Sieg Heil' salutes. Pacifica isn't the first Orange County high school to make headlines for hateful student behavior — or the last.


Big Meat Is Coming For Your Vegan School Lunch
Portland, Maine, is among the 14% of school districts across the country that provided vegan lunches for kids in at least one school in 2017, up from 11.5% in 2016, according to the School Nutrition Association, a nonprofit trade group representing school nutritionists and workers. School districts from Maine to California — including New Bedford, Massachusetts; Lee County, Florida; Oakland, California; Washington, D.C.; and Boulder Valley, Colorado — have started serving vegan lunches, according to Friends of the Earth, an environmental group that tracks alternative school lunch options.


With new CA charter school rules official, here’s the latest on incoming K-12 laws
Tough new charter school regulations have been signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, as expected, but other big K-12 proposals are TBD, including a statewide bond measure, maternity leave for teachers and a later morning bell.
