OCDE NEWSROOM

‘Master motivator’ from OC is one of five California Teachers of the Year
A Santa Ana elementary school teacher has earned the state’s top honor for educators. Laura Gómez, who has worked at Martin Elementary in the Santa Ana Unified School District since 2006, was announced Wednesday as one of five 2021 California Teachers of the Year. “I am deeply honored to be one of the 2021 California Teachers of the Year,” she said. “I am very lucky to get to do something that I am truly passionate about: teaching my students.” Gómez has taught a full-inclusion third-grade class for the last six years. In May, she was one of six local educators surprised with the news that they were Orange County Teachers of the Year after earning district-level honors.

No tricks, just treats: ACCESS staff hands out pumpkins and candy to local families
Staff members from OCDE’s alternative education program recently handed out free pumpkins, ice cream and bags of candy to families that may not be able to trick-or-treat this year. The department partnered with Saddleback Church to host its “Pumpkin Outreach” event, which drew more than 85 families to the Anaheim North site on the morning of Oct. 15. The OCDE educators and support staff who participated were from Area 2 and Area 3 of ACCESS, which is short for Alternative, Community and Correctional Education Schools and Services. The division serves students who have encountered significant obstacles, along with those who are more likely to thrive in nontraditional settings.

Frustrated by continued school closures, health officials have few answers other than patience
Los Angeles City Councilman Bob Blumenfield called two of the county’s most influential people related to public health and schools before the City Council on Wednesday to answer questions he’s received from many constituents confused and frustrated that schools are still not open. The answers provided from Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer and Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner differed little from the consistent message both have put forward since campuses first closed back in March: The decisions would be guided by science. Both recognized that may do little to assuage the anxieties of parents growing tired of teaching their kids at home.

California districts hoping voters will allow them to borrow $13 billion
Sixty school districts throughout California are doing the unthinkable — asking homeowners to vote to impose a property tax for school improvements in the middle of a pandemic when many have lost jobs. If voters approve bond measures totaling $13 billion on the Nov. 3 ballot, districts may be able to use some of the money to make their campuses safer for when children and teachers return for in-person instruction. The number of measures is about half of those on the ballot in 2018 and one-third of those in 2016.

High school teachers in California wary of taking on contentious Biden-Trump election
With student activism on the rise and so much at stake on Nov. 3, this year’s presidential election offers an opportunity of a lifetime for history and government teachers in high schools across California. But many teachers appear to view the election as a red-hot stove, and are standing back or approaching it gingerly, with oven mitts.

Pasadena parents frustrated by city’s response on school reopening
Don’t shoot the messenger. That’s Pasadena’s response to public comments from over 50 frustrated parents during Monday’s council meeting, Oct. 26, parents who are calling on the city and state to reopen schools. Local officials say they’re doing everything in their power to help, processing waivers and helping schools get setup for limited grades and small cohorts. But opening schools completely? That’s out of local control, they say. That’s only going to come when the virus has abated.
