Dana Hills High School football players honor war veterans and, in turn, are inspired to victory |
The Dana Hills High School football team on Friday, Oct. 13, got its first league win since 2013, beating Laguna Hills High School 10-0. Head football coach Phil Skinner attributes much of the evening’s success to inspiration from 1st Sgt. D’Andre Gillon, with Headquarters Company 5th Marine Regiment at Camp Pendleton, who spoke to the players before the game. Gillon talked about respect and courage and explained how Marines prepare for a fight. Gillon’s pep talk was part of the school’s sixth annual “Honor the Valor” game in which 52 veterans from all military branches were celebrated for their service spanning campaigns from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan. |

What did Zuckerberg's $100 million buy in Newark? A bit of progress |
In September 2010, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg went on The Oprah Winfrey Show, along with then-Newark Mayor Cory Booker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, to announce an eye-popping gift: $100 million to reform Newark Public Schools. In the seven years since Zuckerberg’s announcement, critics have not been shy in pointing out how much turmoil the effort has caused. But they haven’t had a good way to figure out whether Zuckerberg’s millions have been well-spent. A new study, out Monday, represents the first attempt to answer that question. It finds that the cash made a difference — in a limited way. |

Brown signs bill relaxing reserve fund limits |
Among the hundred signed by Gov. Jerry Brown last week, one will ease restrictions capping how much a district can save in their reserve budgets–a win for many schools which deemed the cap too limiting. SB 751, authored by Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, raises the reserve cap percentage from 6 percent to 10 percent, while also modifying the reserve cap trigger so it is significantly less likely that the cap would ever become active. |

High schoolers swell community college ranks |
High school students now represent 15 percent of incoming students enrolled in community colleges across the nation, as a growing number of families view “dual enrollment” as a jump start on getting a four-year degree. New research, led by a team from Columbia University, found that nearly two thirds of dual enrollment high school students come from low- or middle-income families. The vast majority of them, 64 percent, ended up with a college diploma within five years of graduating high school. |

Educators Employ Strategies To Help Kids With Anxiety Return To School |
Mental health professionals and educators say what used to be considered run-of-the-mill truancy could actually be something else. Some cases of chronic absenteeism are now being called "school refusal," which is triggered by anxiety, depression, family crises and other traumatic events. It can lead to weeks or even months of missed school days. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America estimates anxiety-based school refusal affects 2 to 5 percent of school-age children. |
