OCDE NEWSROOM

Academic event season has arrived, and we’ve compiled a list of important dates
January arguably marked the start of a new decade. It also ushered in academic event season. Over the next five months, students will take part in an array of local, state and national contests that will test their knowledge and sharpen their skills in history, science, math, reading, writing and just about every other subject. Many of these events demand countless hours of research and prep time, but they also build camaraderie and, in some cases, lead to lifelong friendships. Here’s a rundown of some of the standards-based contests and events that OCDE will have a hand in from now through June.

Gavin Newsom wants every 4-year-old in preschool. His budget has money for 10,000 of them
Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to find a way to send every California 4-year-old to preschool, but he says the state just can’t afford the cost — yet. Newsom inches toward his big goal in the 2020-21 state budget proposal he released last week. It includes a plan to spend $31.9 million to open 10,000 additional spots for state-funded, all-day preschool. The commitment grows to $127 million in subsequent years, according to the Finance Department.

San Francisco Bay Area district’s budget cuts may hurt neediest students, advocates fear
Like most districts across California, West Contra Costa Unified gets extra state funding for vulnerable students, including those who are English learners, in foster care or from low-income families. Yet, those are the very students who could suffer the most when the district makes nearly $50 million in cuts to close its budget gaps for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years, says a coalition of advocates. Those cuts are expected to include layoffs.

In his own words: Gov. Newsom explains his budget proposals for K-12 education
On Jan. 10, 2020 Gov. Gavin Newsom presented his proposed budget for California for the fiscal year beginning on Oct. 1, 2020. Departing from tradition, instead of making short remarks and turning to his finance director to provide more detail, Newsom spent nearly three hours explaining his budget. By far the most extensive remarks were about education, an indication of the high priority Newsom is placing on it. As a public service, EdSource is providing a lightly edited transcript of Newsom’s remarks on his K-12 budget proposals.
